the double edge sword

This means more hours, but then again it'll mean more OT.

SOAPnet Plans General Hospital Spin-Off Sudser
Big news! After seven years of broadcasting sudsy reruns, SOAPnet is making its first original scripted series: It's a General Hospital spin-off, tentatively titled General Hospital: Night Shift. SOAPnet has ordered 13 episodes of the weekly nighttime soap opera, which will debut this summer, per TV Week.

"It's a huge time of growth for us," SOAPnet General Manager Deborah Blackwell told the trade mag. "I think we're really moving from a midsize to fully distributed status, and that's what's allowing us to launch a lot of new original programming ideas." FYI, the fast-growing SOAPnet is currently in about 58 million homes.

Brian Scott Frons, president of daytime at Disney-ABC Television Group, called the GH spin-off a "cost effective way" for SOAPnet to produce its first drama. "We speak to General Hospital viewers on both SOAPnet and ABC on a daily basis and we easily direct them to this special GH: Night Shift series," he explained. "Then we don't have to buy billboards, we don't have to have helicopters dragging signs across the sky."

GH: Night Shift will use some of the younger GH characters, who come with a built-in fanbase. (No specific GH actors or characters were named.) GH's existing sets will also be used.

Unlike the first GH spin-off, Port Charles, most of GH: Night Shift's plotlines will wrap up in a single episode. It was also promised that the nighttime soap would have a "hipper" feel than daytime sudsers usually do, and that there would be more shooting on location. What's more, it won't be necessary to watch the daytime GH to understand what's happening on GH: Night Shift.

Frons said SOAPnet plans to do more original drama series in the future, but noted that the next one would be brand new, rather than a spin-off.

I think any time a new soap goes on the air, it's cause for celebration. What do you think, suds fans? Comment away!

take that Y&R!

So far we've swept February Sweeps, winning the first 6 days! It's kind of weird how our HH (Households) rating hasn't gone up much, but our Women18-49 Demographics has shot through the roof.

HH Rating
1. Young & Restless - 4.2
2. Bold & Beautiful - 3.0
3. General Hospital - 2.9
4. One Life to Live - 2.6
5. All My Children - 2.6
6. Days of Our Lives - 2.5
7. Guiding Light - 2.3
8. As the World Turns - 2.3
9. Passions - 1.6

Women 18-49 Demographics
1. GH - 1297
2. OLTL - 1105
3. Days - 1096
4. Y&R -  1086
5. AMC - 1025
6. Passions - 856
7. B&B - 795
8. GL - 790
9. ATWT - 738

I have no idea how they contrived the 1297 rating in the demos and what each point actually means, but I do know that 1300 is a number that has not been seen in daytime for a long time (over a decade), so this is a huge achievement for us. I also have no idea why, but as far as finances come the Demo is more important than the overall HH rating. Nielson Ratings have always been something thats been foreign to me. I don't know how, but Y&R consistently dominates the ratings every week, so this is quite a big deal around here.

Since this post has become a daytime soap rant, for those of you who don't know, Passions got canceled. They are set to air their last show sometime in Aug. Passions got the axe because NBC wanted to extend the Today Show (by far NBC's biggest money maker) by one hour, effectively taking 1 hour of local affiliate programming away, so the affiliates demanded an hour back and Passions became the sacrificial lamb.

Even though The OC got its cancellation earlier this year due to bad ratings because of its subsequent time slot against Grey's Anatomy and CSI, The OC will be back in April, in rerun form on SOAPnet (another Disney owned cable affiliate). The OC will round out SOAPnet's new teenie-bopper directed late-afternoon lineup which will now consist of Beverly Hills 90210, One Tree Hill (also recently acquired) and The OC.

One last thing, this has to border on the gayest thing ever, but you can now, through SOAPnet, sign up for a fantasy soap team. Supposedly its like a fantasy football or fantasy basketball team but with soap characters and soap moments. I think I'm going to have to sign up for a team tomorrow.

It's quite sad how Port Charles has become my world.
